The Stuff of Legend

As we enter this “month of love” I would like to take a moment and appreciate the untold story of a different way of Love, which I’ve experienced from my brother Dellon.

For years I was the eldest amongst my siblings, constantly trying to live up to the expectations, obligations, and responsibilities set by everyone around me. As enjoyable as that was (for the most part), there were a few times where I wondered what it would be like to have an elder sibling to look up to.

It wasn’t till my 10th birthday when I first met Dellon. He had just come fresh from a civil war which erupted in my home island Ambon, in the Maluku province of Indonesia. Through ministry, my Mother had adopted him as one of several youth which were shipped out of the island and placed under our care in Jakarta.

Though I was only 10, Dellon’s life stories & testimonies made me understand, and appreciate the blessings in my life. It changed my perspective on how I viewed certain things, essentially the concept of sharing. It had become a thing of loving-kindness, something much more enjoyable than what I ever thought it could be.

Selflessness truly is a reward on it’s own. In whatever we do in this life of ours, the greatest is what we do to one another. For in the end, we are all stories - and I for one would like to be remembered as a good one. Love is not selfish, and the more we do for others, the more we do for ourselves. And I am grateful to say that I have experience it first hand. I cannot keep record of all the countless good that has been done to me through out the years, or the acts of kindness and love that I’ve felt for the past decade of my life. Life can be pleasantly unsuspecting sometimes, and I am glad to say I have experienced it.
